Intimacy, as the state of deepest trust, forms a personal space that excludes outsiders. In my Bachelor thesis, I delved into emotional intimacy, specifically exploring how we navigate and publicly express it in today’s world. Given our mobile society, we are constantly seeking new forms of community that convey closeness and belonging.
To achieve this goal quickly, we must be willing to open our private sphere and share it with the public. The contradiction between inner and outer, intimacy and publicity, becomes blurred. Intimacy is no longer a static state but a fluid process, characterized by a mutual interplay of seclusion and openness. The boundaries of intimacy can be defined differently depending on the situation, as flexible as the human being itself.
We provide a glimpse into our innermost selves, just enough to convey intimacy, and conscientiously enough to protect our own intimacy.
In the design process, I sought to visually represent the concept of intimacy as a dynamic and fluid phenomenon. I opted for incorporating organic patterns into Softshell material through laser cutting, symbolizing the emergence of the internal to the external. This design choice aims to reflect the ever-changing nature of intimacy, where boundaries are porous, allowing a delicate balance between revealing and safeguarding our personal spheres.
Similarly, in the print design, I employed elements that echo the theme of intimacy. The visuals mimic the intertwining dance of openness and closure, creating a visual narrative that complements the theoretical exploration of emotional intimacy.
